SPRINGFIELD, MA. – The D'Youville University women's soccer team opened their 2024 season with a close 1-0 loss to American International College on Friday.

Freshman goalkeeper
Haley Pompeo (Eden, N.Y.) made her collegiate debut in net for DYU, allowing just one goal on eight shots. Junior
Laoise O'Haodha (Limerick, Ireland) and junior
T'Mia Kitchings (Hamlin, N.Y.) each tallied a shot on goal for the Saints.

Pompeo was tested early, facing four shots on goal in the first eighteen minutes of action, but was able to steer all four shots away.

DYU saw their first scoring opportunity in the 40
th minute, as Kitchings put a shot on goal, but it was saved by the AIC goalkeeper, and the game went to halftime all square at 0-0.

AIC saw the first scoring opportunity of the second half when they put a shot on goal in the 56
th minute, but Pompeo was able to make the save. In the 66
th minute, however, AIC broke the ice with a goal to go ahead 1-0.

The Saints saw one more scoring chance in the 80
th minute, as O'Haodha put a shot on goal, but it was saved, and AIC would hold on for the 1-0 win.

D'Youville will be back in action on Sunday when they take on Assumption University on the road at 11:00 a.m.
