CHARLESTON, WV. – The D'Youville University Volleyball Team ran into two tough opponents in their final day of the University of Charleston Tournament. The Saints fell 3-0 to Seton Hill and closed out the day with a 3-0 loss to the University of Charleston.
Game One – D'Youville University 0 vs Seton Hill University 3 (26-28, 13-25, 18-25)
Set One
Seton Hill held the early lead at 6-2, but a four-point run from the Saints featuring two kills from
Madeline O'Brien (East Amherst, N.Y. / Clarence) and a service ace from
Alex Darby (Huntington, WV / Spring Valley) tied the game. The Saints took their first lead of the game at 9-7 following an ace from
Giselle Ramirez (Miami, FL / School for Advanced Studies) and a Griffin error. The Saints held the lead for most of the game until a three-point from the Griffins gave them the 25-25 lead.
Mitha Hatwar (Columbus, OH / Olentangy Liberty) tied the game at 26, but the Griffins scored the final two points to take the 28-26 win.
Set Two
The Griffins took the lead first in set two and as the Saints fought to stay close, Seton Hill extended their lead to 12-5 after a six-point run. D'Youville worked to stay in the set working in ten kills and two service aces throughout the set, but the Griffins stayed on top taking set two 25-13.
Set Three
Seton Hill controlled the third set as well jumping out to a 7-1 lead. Both
Cameron Ulinski (Parkland, FL / Marjory Stoneman Douglas) and
Madeline O'Brien were major contributors in the set sprinkling in kills to keep the Saints in the game. With the game at 23-15 in the Griffins favor, the Saints managed a three-point run to reach 18, but the Griffins got the final two points of the set to win 25-18 and win the match 3-0.
Game Two – D'Youville University 0 at University of Charleston 3 (24-26, 23-25, 22-25)
Set One
Gameplay started even between the Saints and Golden Eagles with the Saints holding the close 12-11 lead following a service ace from
Kendal Haberer (Derby, N.Y. / Lake Shore). The Golden Eagles were quick to fight back putting up four in a row to take the lead. The Saints came back to tie the game at 16 after kills from
Madeline O'Brien and
Mitha Hatwar. The Saints took the lead at 24-23 after kills from O'Brien and Ramirez, but the Golden Eagles would score three in a row to win the first set 26-24.
Set Two
D'Youville came out of the gate strong in the second set jumping up 6-1. Charleston was quick to come back, but the Saints hit their stride scoring seven in a row to extend their lead to 15-8 with Sophomores,
Madeline O'Brien,
Mitha Hatwar, and
Giselle Ramirez all playing big roles in the run. A kill form
Mitha Hatwar put the Saints ahead 20-16, but the Golden Eagles managed a five-point run to jump ahead by one.
Madeline O'Brien tied the game at 23 with a big kill, but the Golden Eagles took set two 25-24.
Set Three
The Golden Eagles came back stronger in the final set of the night scoring the first seven points of the game. The Charleston offense stayed strong until they led 21-11. D'Youville still had some fight in them putting together an astounding eight -point run to put them back in the game only trailing by three. A final kill from
Madeline O'Brien and a Golden Eagle error got the Saints to 22, but Charleston recorded one last kill to give them the 25-22 win in set three and the 3-0 match win.
