DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – In the team's East Coast Conference opener, the D'Youville University women's soccer team fell to Mercy University by a score of 2-0 Saturday afternoon.
The Saints (0-5-1, 0-1-0 ECC) had the first opportunity on net in the first half from
Laoise O'Haodha (Limerick, Ireland/Gaelcholaiste Luimnigh) in the seventh minute but was turned away. DYU defense stood tall in the half, taking on 13 shots from the Mavs to keep it 0-0 going into the half.
Mercy struck first in the 65th minute to break the 0-0 game and take the lead.
Ella Hurrle (Jordan Station, Ontario/Eden) had an opportunity in the 71st minute but was denied. Mercy quickly took possession and tacked on their second goal in the 71st minute to take a 2-0 lead.
Late in the game with under four minutes left, DYU tried to draw even with a shot from
Manta Socada (Helsinki, Finland/Deutsche Schule Helsinki) but was turned away as well.
Katie Liljenquist (Utah City, Utah) went the distance in net, making four saves on the day.
The Saints will be off until next Saturday when they return home to host Queens College for a 3:30 p.m. kick.
