Explosive Offense in Game One Leads Softball to a Conference Split Against CSI

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The D'Youville University Softball team hosted the College of Staten Island on a windy Saturday afternoon at Dobson Field. The Saints defeated the Dolphins 11-7 in game one and fell 8-2 in game two.
 
Game One – D'Youville University 11 vs The College of Staten Island 7
 
The Dolphins came out strong scoring six runs in the top of the first off eight hits. The Saints chipped away scoring two in the bottom of the first after Halie Furkas (Rockwood, Mich. / Oscar A. Carlson) singled to center field and scored Gianna Adamo (Lockport, N.Y. / Starpoint) and Emily Przybysz (Hamburg, N.Y. / Frontier Central). Staten Island put another run on the board in the top of the second, but the Saints were not phased. The Saints made their move in the bottom of the inning plating four runs off hits from Isabelle Mancino (Wynantskill, N.Y. / Averill Park), Gianna Adamo, Emily Pryzybysz, and Halie Furkas to bring them within one at 7-6.
 
The innings went on with the score remaining at 7-6 until the Saints found the tying run in the bottom of the fifth. Mia Trietley (Buffalo, N.Y. / Frederick Law Olmsted) singled to third base on a bunt and made it to third following a passed ball and a wild pitch. Mikayla Bush (Elmira Heights, N.Y. / Thomas Edison) hit a sacrifice fly ball to center field to score Trietley. The Saints held the Dolphins on offense and in the bottom of the sixth the Saints plated the eighth run for the lead along with three more insurance runs. Laura Beck (Clifton Park, N.Y. / Shenendehowa) and Emily Przybysz both singled and Gianna Adamo came up with a triple to the left center field fence to score both runners. Halie Furkas came up again with a double to knock Adamo in and Furkas would go on to score the Saints eleventh run of the day on a Dolphins throwing error. The Dolphins were shut down in the top of the seventh giving the Saints the 11-7 win in game one.
 
As a team, the Saints recorded 12 hits in game one ad Freshman, Halie Furkas led the way on offense going three for four with four RBIs and one run scored. Kendal Lehnen (Sherrill, N.Y. / Vernon Verona Sherrill) came in as relief in the third inning throwing five complete innings with no runs allowed and three strikeouts.
 
Game Two – D'Youville University 2 vs The College of Staten Island 8
 
The Dolphins got on the board first in game two plating one run in the top of the first, another in the top of the second, and two more in the top of the third to take the 4-0 lead. D'Youville got two runs back in the bottom of the third after Isabella Mancino and Laura Beck both singled to put runners on second and third. Gianna Adamo came up with an RBI single to score Mancino and Furkas hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Laura Beck.
 
As the game went on, the Dolphins plated another run in the fifth and then added three more in the top of the seventh to bring the score to 8-2. The Saints had their last chance in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to comeback giving the Dolphins the 8-2 win in game two.
 
Up Next
The D'Youville University Softball team is back on the road for another round of East Coast conference doubleheaders next weekend. The Saints will take on St. Thomas Aquinas College on Friday, April 19th with game one beginning at 2:00 PM. The Saints will then battle Mercy University on Saturday, April 20th with game one beginning at 12:00 PM.
