BUFFALO, N.Y. – Returning home to Dobson Field Saturday afternoon, the D'Youville University men's lacrosse team fell in a heartbreaker to the University of Bridgeport by a score of 11-10 in double overtime.
The Saints (1-4) were led by
Carsyn Kent (Whitby, Ontario) with four goals while
Stefano Evan (Vestal, N.Y.) and
Luciano Gonzalez (Coquitlam, British Columbia) each added two goals and one assist.
Tyler Vohwinkel (Buffalo, N.Y.) and
Nick Sholett (Vestal, N.Y.) round out the DYU scorers with one goal and one assist each.
Four Saints led the defensive effort with four groundballs each while Sholett led the way with four caused turnovers.
Logan Schwartz (Depew, N.Y.) and
William Nichols (Palmyra, N.Y.) each added three caused turnovers.
Evan got the game going, scoring just 28 seconds into the game. That sparked the Saints to go one a 3-0 run to open the game with Evan finding Vohwinkel for the second goal and Evan adding the third goal at the 10:46 mark in the first frame. The Purple Knights went on a run of their own, scoring four unanswered goals well into the second quarter. Kent knotted the game up at 4-4 at the 5:26 mark before the half, off the dish from Vohwinkel. Bridgeport responded to regain the lead. DYU ended the half on a 2-0 run with goals from Sholett and Kent to take the 6-5 lead into halftime.
BU opened the second half with a goal before the Saints went on a 3-0 run. During the run, Gonzalez found the back of the net twice with Kent adding another goal to make it 9-6 at the 8:39 mark of the third quarter. The Purple Knights made it 9-7 before Kent made it 10-7 going into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, BU scored three straight goals to send the game into overtime. After a scoreless first overtime period, the Purple Knights took the game in the second overtime.
Nichols went the distance in net, making 16 saves.
The Saints will be off until the head to the Cortland Classic where they will take on Saint Michael's College on Friday, March 8th, and American International College on Sunday, March 10th.
