Softball Drops Tough Fought Game to Wayne State but Comes Back to Defeat Saint Michael’s in Game Two

WINTER HAVEN, FL. – The D'Youville University Softball team fell in a tough game to Wayne State University 11-10 in their first game of the day but made a strong comeback in game two and defeated Saint Michael's College 6-2 in their second game of the day.

Game One – D'Youville University 10 vs Wayne State University 11

The Saints got it going in the top of the first plating 3 runs right away. Leadoff batter, Halie Furkas (Rockwood, Mich. / Oscar A. Carlson) got things going with a single down the left field line. A sacrifice bunt by senior Mikayla Bush (Elmira Heights, N.Y. / Thomas Edison) moved runners over to second and third allowing senior Ava Miller (Elma, N.Y. / St. Mary's) to come to the plate and drive in two more with a double. Sophomore Sophia Arno (Clarence Center, N.Y. / The Brook Hill School) also plated one run with a single to right center.

Wayne State responded, plating 3 runs in the bottom of the first to tie the game, but the Saints were ready to retake the lead. Emily Pryzbysz (Hamburg, N.Y/ Frontier Central) singled and stole second to get into scoring position and Laura Beck (Clifton Park, N.Y. / Shenendehowa) singled Pryzbysz in to give the Saints the 4-3 lead in the top of the second.

Wayne State had no response, and the Saints continued their strong offense into the top of third. Lauren Booth (Lancaster, N.Y. / Lancaster) and Ava Miller both singled to start the inning and Sophia Arno followed behind to load the bases. Isabella Mancino (Wynantskill, N.Y. / Averill Park) singled up the middle to score one and Gianna Adamo (Lockport, N.Y. / Starpoint) reached on a fielder's choice, knocking in the Saints sixth run of the game. Hallie Furkas again came up big with a double to right field scoring two more. The Saints would score their ninth run of the game at the end of the inning bringing the score to 9-3.

Both teams would continue to work at the plate, but no one could up a run until the top of the sixth when Booth would single in Furkas to give the Saints the 10-3 lead.

Wayne State found their footing in the bottom of the sixth plating eight runs to take the 11-10 lead. Cassidy Daves (Blanco, TX  / Blanco) led off the top of the seventh with a double down the left field line, but the Saints were unable to score her and Wayne State would win the game 11-10.

Game Two – D'Youville University 6 vs Saint Michael's College 2
A strong outing in the circle for freshman pitcher Kendal Lehnen (Sherrill, N.Y. / Vernon Verona Sherrill) helped the Saints split on the day. Lehnen only allowed two runs on five hits and struck out seven.

St. Michaels started the top of the first plating their only two runs of the game. The Saints got their offense going in the bottom of the fourth. Cassidy Daves led off the inning with a single to left field and Mikayla Bush followed behind bunting for a hit. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Gianna Adamo came up next with a double to center field to tie the game. The Saints weren't done yet as Anna Chapman (Buffalo, N.Y. / West Seneca East) singled to shortstop to score Adamo, Halie Furkas singled to score one and Laura Beck reached on an error to score the Saints fifth and final run of the inning.

The Saints nabbed their sixth run of the game in the bottom of the fifth when Isabella Mancino doubled in Gianna Adamo and with Saint Michael's unable to answer, the Saints would win their second game of the day 6-2.
