PETERSBURG, VA – The D'Youville University baseball team defeated Virginia State 5-1 on Tuesday.
Â
The Saints got off to a quick start, as RF
Jake Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y.) led off the game with a single, advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored on a
Billy Morris (Lancaster, N.Y.) groundout to take 1-0 lead. Virginia State responded in the bottom of the first with a pair of hits off Morris to knot the game at 1-1.
Â
In the top of the second, C
Jeremy Glinski (Sloan, N.Y.) started the inning with a single into left center. He then stole second and went to third on an error and was brought home on a groundout from SS
Alec Boucher (Essex, Ontario) to put DYU back in front 2-1.
Â
In the top of the fifth, CF
Caden Strobel (Pittstown, Pa.) wreaked havoc on the bases with his speed, laying down a bunt single and then stealing second and third base. 2B
Alex Dzimian (Lakeview, N.Y.) brought Strobel home with a single to center, extending the Saints' lead to 3-1. LF
Ethan Hammond (Oakville, Ontario) tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1.
Â
After allowing a run in the first inning, Morris settled in, striking out the side in the bottom of the fifth. Morris didn't allow a hit after the first inning and exited after seven innings and ten punchouts.
Â
Although his day on the mound was done, Morris stayed in the lineup at shortstop and led off the top of the eighth with a base hit to center. Morris would come around to score on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Strobel to make it 5-1 DYU.
Â
Blaise Kolbert (Lancaster, N.Y.) came in for Morris in the eighth and closed out Virginia State with two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two.
