Women's Basketball Prevails in Thriller Against District of Columbia

Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – The D'Youville University women's basketball team completed the season sweep of the University of the District of Columbia on Friday, defeating the Firebirds in an 85-82 thriller.
 
Stella Mollica (Shillington, Pa.) was a sparkplug for the Saints, scoring a season-high 22 points, grabbing a season-high eight rebounds, tallying six assists, and recording four steals. Jaelyn Vleer-Elliott (Waterville, N.Y.) turned in a fantastic performance as well, scoring 16 points and grabbing a season-high nine rebounds. Anna Jankovic (Averill Park, N.Y.) scored 14 points and dished out a team-high seven assists. Brianne Moxley (Penfield, N.Y.) also turned in a double-digit scoring night with 11 points.
 
After UDC opened the game on an 8-2 run, Vleer-Elliott converted a pair of layups to make it 11-6 with 4:45 remaining in the first quarter. The Firebirds continued to roll out to a 18-9 lead, but a three-pointer from Isabella Kostyal-Larrier (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) started to shift momentum in the Saints' favor. On the next possession, Mollica poured in a three-pointer of her own to make it 20-15 with 1:22 left in the first. A layup at the buzzer from Mollica made it just a 22-19 lead for UDC heading into the second quarter.
 
Mollica tied the game early in the second quarter with another three-pointer. A layup from Jankovic gave D'Youville their first lead of the day at the 8:16 mark. After the Firebirds regained the lead, Kostyal-Larrier knocked down a three to tie it at 27 with six minutes remaining. Six straight points from UDC put them back in front, but a layup from Jankovic and a three from Moxley cut the deficit to one with four minutes until halftime. Back-to-back layups from Vleer-Elliott and Mollica put the Saints ahead 39-36 with 2:41 left in the half. The game went to halftime knotted at 41-41.
 
Jankovic scored four straight points out of halftime to put DYU ahead 45-41. However, an ensuing 13-4 run from the Firebirds put them back in front 54-49 with 6:08 remaining in the third quarter. A three-pointer from Sofie Fuglsang (Oberanven, Luxembourg) brought the Saints back within two at the 5:53 mark. A three-point play from Vleer-Elliott made it 58-57 UDC with 3:40 to go in the quarter. As the third quarter came to a close, the Firebirds held a 64-61 advantage.
 
The Saints started the final frame with an 8-0 run thanks to a Fuglsang three-pointer and a three-point play from Mollica, and DYU regained the lead 69-64 with 7:18 to go. After UDC went ahead 73-72, Kostyal-Larrier dropped in her third three-pointer of the night to take the lead right back with 4:13 remaining. Moxley cashed in a mid-range jumper to make it 77-74 DYU with 2:38 left to play. A 15-footer from Fuglsang put the Saints up by four with just 34 seconds remaining. Mollica iced the game by going four-for-four from the free throw line in the final 12 seconds, capping off a brilliant performance.
 
The Saints will be back on the court on Sunday, when they face the College of Staten Island at 1:00 p.m.
