BUFFALO, N.Y. – In their regular-season finale, the D'Youville University men's basketball team fell to Roberts Wesleyan University by a score of 110-77 Wednesday evening on Senior Night.
The Saints (7-20, 4-12 ECC) were led by their seniors,
Bryson Birdsong (Winter Haven, Fla.) and
Luke Theisen (Lake View, N.Y.), who had game-highs 24 points each.
Kevin Thompson (Buffalo, N.Y.) had a solid night for DYU, going 7-for-9 (77.8 percent) from the floor for 16 points.
RWU jumped out to an early 7-0 lead before Birdsong knocked down a pair of free throws to get DYU on the board. The Redhawks were able to jump out to a 12-2 lead with a layup from Isaiah Elmore. The Saints battled back, cutting the deficit to two points after Theisen knocked down a three-pointer to make it 17-15 just over five minutes into the game.
The Redhawks got back out to a double-digit lead in the final two minutes of the first half, going on a 10-0 run to take the 55-39 lead into the break.
In the early goings of the second half, RWC saw their lead grow to 26 points thanks in part to an 8-0 run. The Saints had one last gasp to get in the game, going on a 13-7 run to make it 77-58 with just over 10 minutes left in regulation. During the stretch, DYU was led by Thompson with six points with Theisen adding four points and Birdsong capping the run with a converted and0one opportunity.
D'Youville went 28-for-71 (39.4 percent) from the field and 17-for-21 (81.0 percent) from the free throw line. Roberts Wesleyan shot 42-for-69 (60.9 percent) from the floor and 16-for-21 (76.2 percent) from the free throw line. The Redhawks held the advantage on the glass, grabbing 47 rebounds to the Saints' 27 rebounds.
Prior to the game, the D'Youville University athletics department recognized Birdsong and Theisen for their commitment during their time with the men's basketball program.
