STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Wrapping up the weekend road trip, the D'Youville University men's basketball fell to the College of Staten Island by a score of 102-83.
The Saints (6-17, 3-9 ECC) were led offensively by
Noah Hutchins (Buffalo, N.Y.) who had a career-high 24 points with
Bryson Birdsong (Winter Haven, Fla.) adding 19 points. Birdsong also led the team on the glass, grabbing seven boards.
After allowing an and-one opportunity in the Dolphins first possession, DYU responded as
Nelson St. Louis (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) knocked down the jumper. CSI scored on the ensuing possession but
Trayton Trice (Romeoville, Ill.) kept pace with a layup in the lane to make it 6-4. The Dolphins caught fire, scoring 12 unanswered to make it 18-4. Hutchins was able to halt the run with a made basket.
Trailing 23-6 at the 11:45 mark of the first half, Hutchins took over as he scored the Saints' next seven points to make it a 10-point game. During the stretch, Hutchins knocked down a jumper in the lane, cashed in a three-pointer from
Nasir Hammonds (Norfolk, Va.) and hit a pair of free throws.
CSI was able to gain a 20-point lead, but a 16-5 run helped cut the deficit to nine-points. St. Louis led the scoring during the spree, scoring four points including one from beyond the arc to make it 39-30. The Dolphins pushed their lead back out to 20-points before
Chase Jenkins (Titusville, Fla.) hit a three-pointer to make it 55-38 going into the break.
Facing a sizeable deficit in the last nine minutes of the game, the Saints continued to battle as they outscored the Dolphins 29-13.
DYU went 25-for-62 (40.3 percent) from the floor while going 27-for-32 (84.4 percent) from the free throw line. CSI went 36-for-74 (48.6 percent) from the field and 17-for-24 (70.8 percent) from the free throw line. The Dolphins held the advantage on the glass, grabbing 37 rebounds to the Saints' 30 rebounds.
The Saints will be back in action this Friday, February 16th, as they host Mercy University at 8 p.m.
