MANSFIELD, Pa. – Wrapping up their four-game road trip to start the 2024-25 season, the D'Youville University men's basketball fell to Mansfield University by a score of 68-66 Saturday afternoon.
The Saints (1-3) were led by
Justin Moore (Oxford, Ala./Oxford) with 12 points with
Renard Fontes-Jules (Brockton, Mass./Olympus Sports) adding nine points.
TI Scruggs (Huntsville, Ala./Hazel Green) had a solid game, scoring sevens points and leading the team in rebounds with seven.
DYU got out to a 10-5 lead in the early goings of action off a fastbreak layup from Fontes-Jules and a pair of free throws
Kayden Wells (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnetonka). The Mounties were able to cut the lead down to one and the teams traded baskets. D'Youville got out to a 22-13 lead at the 8:09 mark of the games, scoring six unanswered points capped off by a fastbreak basket from
Nelson St. Louis (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Port St. Lucie). Soon after, the Saints grew their lead to 10 points with just over five minutes to go in the first half with back-to-back buckets from Scruggs. Mansfield came crawling back to tie the game but a basket from Moore helped DYU take a 41-36 lead into the break.
D'Youville was able to maintain their lead for most of the second half of action but three made free throws and a three-pointer from the Mounties helped them tie the game at 62-62 with five minutes to go in regulation. The Saints got the lead back from a layup from
Noah Hutchins (Buffalo, N.Y./IMG Academy). Mansfield went on a 4-2 to close the game out to help get the win.
The Saints went 26-for-55 (47.3 percent) from the field with the Mounties going 22-for-51 (43.1 percent) from the floor. D'Youville had the advantage on the glass, grabbing 33 rebounds to Mansfield's 30.
DYU will have a quick turn around as they host the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown on Monday, November 18th, at 6 p.m.
