COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Getting in their first action of the 2024 portion of the season, the D'Youville University women's wrestling team traveled to the Ursinus Duals, coming away with a team record of 1-3.
The Saints (4-7) go their lone dual victory of the day, coming against Cedar Crest College by a score of 26-25.
D'Youville University 26 – Cedar Crest College 25
Cedar Crest jumped out to an early 15-0 lead, winning the first three bouts by forfeit.
Juliana Smith (Mexico, N.Y.) got DYU on the board, winning by forfeit in the 123-pound weight class. The Falcons got those points back, winning the next bout by forfeit to make it 20-5.
The Saints went on a run, winning the next four matches to take the 25-20 lead.
Madison Wellen (East Berlin, Pa.) won by fall over Alaina Stanford, needing 2:45 to do so. Saniyah Ward (The Colony, Texas) also won by fall over Zakiyyah Sabir in just over two minutes of action, and
Alessandra Elliott (Staten Island, N.Y.) got the win in her first match by way of a forfeit win.
Elizabeth Stricklin (San Antonio, Texas) got the 13-7 decision win over Sarah Seltzer in the 170 pound weight class. Cedar Crest won the final match by fall to make it 25-25. The Saints were awarded the extra team point based on criteria to secure the dual victory.
Delaware Valley University 36 – D'Youville University 11
In their second dual of the day, the Saints fell behind the Aggies by a score of 24-0 after the first five bouts. Wellen got DYU on the board, getting the fall over Eva Herrera in just 30 seconds. Elliott continued the rally by picking up a fall over Olivia Kinder in 51 seconds of the 143-pound weight class to make it 24-10.
The Aggies would go on to win the final three bouts but Stricklin would score a team point in her match by scoring a technical point in her match.
York College of Pennsylvania 24 – D'Youville University 20
The Saints got on the board in the third match of the third dual, getting the fall over Ava Weibley in 2:38 at 123 pounds to make it 10-5. York took the next bout by forfeit but Wellen continued her strong outing, getting the fall over Naylee Ierley in 27 seconds to make it 15-10 in favor of the Spartans.
York would win the 143 pound bout by Ward did come away with a team point for scoring a technical point. Elliott would help zero in on the Spartans, making it a 19-15 score as she came away with a tech. fall over Rebekah Patzke at 155 pounds. Stricklin helped DYU get the 20-19 lead by way of a forfeit win. York would get the dual win in the final bout with a win by fall.
Ursinus College 24 – D'Youville University 16
The Bears jumped out to an early 19-0 lead after four bouts but Wellen got the Saints on the board, getting the fall over Paisley Fox in 1:47 of action to make it 19-5.
Emily Sindoni (Nichols, N.Y.) continued the attack, getting the tech. fall over Chloe Charlesworth to make it 19-9.
At 155 pounds, Elliott was able to get one team point for scoring a technical point in her 6-4 decision loss against Emma Matera. Stricklin continued her strong day, getting the 11-2 decision over Gianna Perez to make it 24-13. DYU closed out the day with
Riley Wentlent (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) getting the 7-4 decision win over Shelly Gushue.
The Saints will be back in action this Saturday, January 13th, as they head across the boarder for the Brock University Invitational.
