BUFFALO, N.Y. – The D'Youville University Men's Volleyball team defeated Roberts Wesleyan University 3-0 on Wednesday night in the College Center.
Set One
The Saints started the match strong with two Redhawks errors and two kills from
Jacob Malak (Wales, Wisc. / Kettle Moraine) to go up 4-0. Roberts scored their first point, but the Saints kept their foot on the gas jumping up to a 7-2 lead after a kill from
Tymek Brzoza (Tychy, Poland / NLO Jastrzebski Wegiel). As gameplay continued, the Saints kept a steady lead, and the Saints took the 25-18 win in set one following a Redhawks service error.
Set Two
Roberts Wesleyan got on top first in the second set jumping out to a 2-0 lead, but the Saints quickly came back to go up 3-2 after kills from
Haven Wankerl (Cross Plains, Wisc. / Middleton) and
Tymek Brzoza and a Redhawk error. Roberts managed to retake the lead going up 8-7, but a kill form
Jacob Malak tied the game, and a Roberts error gave the Saints back the lead that they would hold for the remainder of the set. As gameplay continued, the Redhawks would stay close, but another Roberts service error would give D'Youville the 25-20 win in set two.
Set Three
D'Youville kept the momentum going into the third set, taking the 3-2 lead. From there the Saints would go on a four-point run with two serving aces by
Jacob Malak and kills from
Shaun Vattakuzhiyil (Sugar Land, TX / Elkins) and
Tymek Brzoza. With DYU leading 7-2, the Saints continued to apply pressure. A Roberts Wesleyan error gave the Saints the 20-14 lead. Roberts did not give up their fight, but the final kill from
Haven Wankerl gave the Saints the 25-20 win in set three and the 3-0 win in the match.
Saints Stats
Shaun Vattakuzhiyil led the Saints with 11 kills while
Randy Adorno (Bayamon, Puerto Rico / Winter Park (Fla.)) recorded 29 assists with eight digs. The Saints outscored the Redhawks with 75 points compared to 58 and had a team hitting percentage of .225.

The D'Youville University Men's team is on the road traveling to Dominican University on Friday for a 7:00 PM game. The Saints will then head to Saint Thomas Aquinas College for a Sunday matchup at 12 PM.
