Box Score 2 BUFFALO, NY – The D'Youville University softball team got off to a slow start in the first inning of game one as the Mercyhurst University Lakers put up a six-spot on their way to an 8-0 win.
Hannah Bardeen's 2-run home run tied game two at 3-3 in the third, but errors plagued the Saints as they fell 11-3 in the nightcap.
Game One: MU 8, DYU 0 (F/5)
- Back-to-back bases-loaded walks before a pair of RBI doubles helped the Lakers score six runs on four hits in the opening frame.
- DYU looked to answer in the first with runners on the corners and one out but an inning-ending line drive double play ended the Saints scoring threat.
- A pair of MU RBI singles to center in the fourth added two more to bring the run rule into play, 8-0 Lakers.
- The Saints looked destined to get the necessary run to keep the game going in the fifth with bases loaded and one out but a tapper back to the pitcher got the out at home before the next DYU batter struck out to end the game, 8-0.
Inside the Numbers:
Game Two: MU 11, DYU 3 (F/6)
- After a clean first two innings, a MU 2-out single down the right field line got the Lakers on the board first in the third.
- The next hitter doubled down the left field line to double the margin before another run scored via a fielding error to put MU ahead 3-0.
- DYU responded in the bottom of the inning as Bower drove in Emily Przybysz after her leadoff walk.
- Bardeen stepped into the batter's box next and drove a line drive over the left field fence to tie the game at 3-3.
- After a MU sacrifice bunt moved a runner to second with one out, a DYU throwing error put runners on the corners before another throwing error, this time on a steal attempt, allowed the Lakers to regain the lead, 4-3, in the fourth.
- The third error of the inning, two batters later, plated the second unearned run of the frame, MU 5-3.
- Back-to-back fielding errors allowed MU to add on three more in the fifth, two unearned, as the Lakers held a 7-3 advantage after 5 ½ innings.
- A MU 2-out double to right center in the sixth brought another unearned run home before the next Lakers' batter ripped a 2-run home run to right field to bring the run rule into play at 11-3.
- The Saints went down in order in the sixth to end the ballgame.
