Women's Basketball Defeated by Grand Valley State

ALLENDALE, MI – The D'Youville University women's basketball team were defeated on the road by Grand Valley State University on Saturday by a score of 68-26.
 
Freshman Mercy Lasu (Winnipeg, Canada) led the scoring for the Saints with eight points off the bench. Lasu also added four rebounds, two steals, and a block. Junior Anna Jankovic (Averill Park, N.Y.) and junior Jaelyn Vleer-Elliott (Waterville, N.Y.) also contributed four rebounds for the Saints.
 
Grand Valley State got out to a 12-0 lead to start the game before sophomore Isabella Kostyal-Larrier (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) got the scoring started for the Saints with a close-range jumper. Junior Stella Mollica (Shillington, Pa.) then drained a three-pointer to cut it to 14-5 with 1:29 left in the first quarter. Vleer-Elliott cut it to 14-7 at the start of the second quarter with a ten-footer off the feed from senior Brianne Moxley (Penfield, N.Y.). The Lakers then reeled off a 16-0 run to extend their lead to 30-9 heading into halftime.
 
Grand Valley State then went on a 12-2 run to start the third quarter, before a couple close-range jumpers from senior Carla Torrubia Cano (Melilla, Spain) and Lasu put a stop to the run, making it 42-15 with 2:34 remaining in the quarter. The Lakers took a 50-18 lead heading into the final quarter. They would continue to distance themselves from the Saints with a 5-0 run to start the fourth. Lasu put a stop to the run with a jumper in the paint to make it 55-20 with seven minutes to go. Senior Erin Hardick (Amherst, N.Y.) sank her first three-pointer as a Saint to make it 59-24 with 3:46 remaining. Lasu scored her eighth point of the day with 20 seconds left to close things out for the Saints.
 
The Saints are back at it tomorrow, as they face Wayne State University at 1:00 p.m.
