BUFFALO, N.Y. - The D'Youville University Women's Volleyball Team (7-17, 3-8 ECC) lost a hard-fought match 3-1 to Queens College on Sunday afternoon.
D'Youville University 1 vs Queens College 3 (26-24, 21-25, 24-26, 27-29)
First Set
Matchplay started in the Knights favor as they jumped out to a 9-3 lead. Queens held the lead for most of the set, but the Saints stayed close until the score tied at 18 after a knight's error. The score continued to stay tied until D'Youville took their first lead at 24-23. The score tied up again, but a kill from
Madeline O'Brien (East Amherst, N.Y.) put the Saints on top again at 25-24. The Saints took the 26-24 win in set one after a block by
Mitha Hatwar (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) and
Brianna Damstetter (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors).
Second Set
It was the Saints who got ahead early in set two, jumping out to a 4-1 lead after a service ace from
Emma Wlostwoski (Alden, N.Y./Alden). The Knights battled back taking the 7-6 lead.The Knight expanded their lead to 15-10, but the Saints came right back. D'Youville went on a five-point run to tie the set up. The Knights called a timeout to try and stop the Saints momentum, but a block from
Brianna Damstetter and
Nathalya Rocha (El Paso, TX/Canutillo) pushed the Saints ahead 16-15. The Knights found their momentum and would go on a five-point run to jump up 20-16.
D'Youville took a timeout of their own and came back to score two more with kills from
Madeline O'Brien and
Eve Musielak (Eden, N.Y/Eden). The Knights retook the lead with a score of 23-20, but the Saints continued to fight scoring one more before the Knights would go on to win 25-21.
Third Set
The third set started even with a service ace from O'Brien tying the set at five. Queens began to pull away, jumping out to a 9-5 lead, but a kill from
Eve Musielak brought the Saints back in. The Knights took a 14-10 lead, but a kill from
Mitha Hatwar, two errors from the Knights and a service ace from Wlostowski tied the game at 14. After a Knights timeout, the Saints kept their momentum going and a block from O'Brien gave the Saints the 15-14 lead.
The Knights continued to apply pressure taking the 20-16 lead. The fight continued as the Saints again came back to tie the game at 22, but the Knights kept the pressure on and would take set three 26-24.
Fourth Set
D'Youville started set four on top after taking the 5-2 lead. The Knights fought back, and the score remained close until a kill from
Mitha Hatwar put the Saints up 16-14. Once again, the Knights fought back and managed to tie the game at 18. D'Youville took the 22-19 lead, but the Knights gained momentum to take the 23-22 lead. A knight's error tied the game at 23 and a block from
Giselle Ramirez (Miami, Fla./School for Advanced Studies) put the Saints ahead 24-23. Again, the Knights came back to tie, but O'Brien notched another kill to bring back the lead. The game continued back and forth with neither team able to take the two-point lead. Ultimately, after multiple hard-fought rallies, the Knights would score the final two points and win the set 29-27 and the match 3-1.
Saints Stats
Madeline O'Brien led the Saints with 16 kills between four sets while
Mitha Hatwar delivered 34 assists.
Giselle Ramirez was a standout on defense with five blocks and
Samantha Killane (Vero Beach, Fla./Lincoln Park Academy) excelled on both sides of the net with four serving aces and 16 digs.
