BUFFALO, N.Y. – Making the quick trip across town, the D'Youville University men's basketball team fell to Canisius University by a score of 109-69 Monday evening in exhibition action.
The Saints (1-3) were led by
Nasir Hammonds (Norfolk, Va.) with 15 points and five boards with
Noah Hutchins (Buffalo, N.Y.) adding 14 points and four rebounds.
Trayton Trice (Romeoville, Ill.) also added five rebounds in the contest.
The Golden Griffins jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead after the first two minutes of action but a jumper by Hammonds was able to halt the run. Canisius added another run before DYU went on an 8-0, fueled behind six-straight points from Hutchins and capped off by a layup by
Dut Kuol (Aweil, South Sudan) off the feed from
Chase Jenkins (Titusville, Fla.) to make it a 14-12 game at the 13:25 mark.
The Griffs were able to regain the momentum to make it a nine-point game, but Hutchins and Hammonds stopped the quick offense to make it 23-18. Canisius caught the Saints in a slump, going on a 12-0 run with five minutes until the break to make it 35-18. The Golden Griffins continued their momentum going into the half with a 47-28 lead.
The Saints went 26-for-81 (32.1 percent) from the floor and 13-for-17 (76.5 percent) from the free throw line. The Golden Griffins went 36-for-66 (54.5 percent) from the field and 24-for-34 (70.6 percent) from the charity stripe.
Canisius controlled the glass, grabbing 59 rebounds to DYU's 35 boards. The Saints were able to create defense into offense, scoring 21 points off turnovers to Canisius' 14 points.
The Saints will be back in action this Saturday, November 25th, as they host East Stroudsburg University for a 3 p.m. tip.
