Women's Basketball Defeated By Walsh On The Road

NORTH CANTON, OH - The D'Youville University women's basketball team fell to Walsh University on Saturday afternoon by a score of 72-55.

Junior Anna Jankovic (Averill Park, N.Y.) led the scoring charge for the Saints with 11 points on 5-10 shooting, followed by junior Stella Mollica (Shillington, Pa.) with ten points on 4-6 shooting. Jankovic also led DYU in rebounding with eight boards and also collected two steals. Mollica and sophomore Morgan Giancaterino (Orchard Park, N.Y.) also made their presence known on defense, adding two steals each as well.

After Walsh went on an 11-0 run right out of the gate, Mollica got the Saints on the board with a fastbreak three-pointer. A pair of layups from Mollica and junior Jaelyn Vleer-Elliott (Waterville, N.Y.) cut the deficit to seven with 3:34 left in the first quarter. With 58 seconds to go in the quarter, sophomore Isabella Kostyal-Larrier (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) sunk a pair of free throws to draw DYU within ten points of the lead. However, the Cavaliers buried a three to close out the quarter with a 28-15 lead.

After a layup from Jankovic to start the second quarter, Walsh embarked on a 13-3 run to go up 41-20 with 5:14 remaining. Two good free throws and a layup from Vleer-Elliott followed by a Giancaterino layup brought the Saints within 13 of the Cavaliers. Walsh was able to put a stop to the Saints' run and went into halftime with a 47-30 advantage.

Jankovic opened the third quarter with a layup to make it 47-32. Walsh then ripped off a 14-3 run to open up a 26-point lead with two minutes remaining in the quarter. Senior Carla Torrubia Cano (Melilla, Spain) converted two free throws to put a stop to the Cavaliers' run, but the Saints closed the third quarter down 65-38.

Kostyal-Larrier sparked a 15-3 run for the Saints with a three-pointer to begin the fourth quarter. Jankovic chipped in a layup and a mid-range jumper, while Mollica converted a mid-range jumper and a free throw during the run. Freshman Ava Pearson (Colonie, N.Y.) scored her first collegiate points with a layup to make it 70-53. A fastbreak layup from Giancaterino in the final seconds capped things off for the Saints, as they fell 72-55.

DYU is back in action next Monday, when they face Canisius University in an exhibition on the road at 5:00 p.m.
