SPARKILL N.Y. - The D'Youville softball team began a busy road trip consisting of three East Coast Conference doubleheaders this weekend, dropping the first two games, 4-3 and 2-1, to St. Thomas Aquinas Friday afternoon. The pair of defeats moves the Saints to 15-6 on the season and 4-3 in league play.
Junior Hannah Bardeen drove in all three D'Youville runs in the top of the first inning with a three-run home run to center field to give the Saints an early cushion. Bardeen's blast was her third of the season. Freshman Gianna Adamo, who reached on a fielder's choice, and senior Carly Milleville, who reached on a single to right field, also scored on the play.
The Spartans erased D'Youville's lead with a three-run fourth inning and an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning put the Saints away in game one.
Sophomore Lauren Booth pitched all 7.2 innings in the D'Youville circle. Booth fanned five batters and was charged with four earned runs on 11 hits.
Sophomore Mikayla Bush (2-for-4) was the only Saint to hit safely more than once in the opening setback.
The Saints went down early in game two as STAC plated runs in the first and third innings to grab a 2-0 lead.
Bardeen drove in her fourth run of the day on an RBI single to left, cutting the D'Youville deficit in half in the bottom of the sixth inning. D'Youville got the tying run on base in the top of the seventh inning but was unable to advance the run home.
Freshman Sarah Parzych got the starting nod in game two and struck out two batters while allowing two earned runs on six hits during her 5.2 innings of work. Freshman Cassie Crerar (0.1 innings) pitched in relief of Parzych.
The Saints head to Bridgeport for a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon with the Purple Knights. Game times are scheduled for noon and 2 p.m.
