ALFRED, N.Y. - After dropping the opener in extra innings, 2-1, the D'Youville softball team bounced back to blank Alfred, 6-0, in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon. After trading wins with the Saxons, the Saints move to 15-5 on the season.
The Saints were held scoreless in the opener until the top of the sixth inning when sophomore Lauren Booth singled down the left-field line to drive in junior Hannah Bardeen. Booth's RBI single tied the game at one after Alfred took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.
A fielding error in the D'Youville infield with the bases-loaded won the game for Alfred in the top of the eighth inning.
Booth was charged with the loss despite an impressive effort in the circle. The sophomore fanned five batters and allowed no earned runs on six hits in 7.1 innings.
Bardeen (2-for-4, 2B) and Booth (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) led the Saints' offense in the opener.
The Saints did their damage in the middle innings in game two. D'Youville got on the board in the third inning when freshman Laura Beck stole home to grab a 1-0 advantage.
A four-run fourth inning put the Saints ahead, 5-0, highlighted by RBI singles from junior Jamie Bower and senior Maddy Pepke. Bardeen scored the first run of the inning on a passed ball and Beck scored the final run of the frame when freshman Gianna Adamo was hit by a pitch.
An RBI base hit to right-center from Beck tacked on one more run for the Saints in the fifth inning.
Freshman Sarah Parzych (7-2) shut down the Saxon offense in her complete-game shutout. In 7.0 innings, Parzych struck out three and allowed five hits.
Beck (3-for-3, RBI, 2R) paced the offense to help the Saints earn the non-conference split.
The Saints begin a busy weekend of East Coast Conference action on the road when they take on St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday, April 8. Game times are scheduled for 12 and 2 p.m.
