AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Despite an on-and-off downpour causing muddy field conditions and a delay late in the game, the D'Youville softball team persevered to their third consecutive win to open the season in a 4-2 victory over Nyack College at the Auburndale Sports Complex. Due to poor field conditions from the rain, D'Youville's second game of the day against Chestnut Hill was canceled.
The Saints fell behind early when Nyack grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Maddy Pepke evened things up in the top of the third with an RBI single, driving in junior Hannah Bardeen.
The back-and-forth contest continued in the bottom of the fifth when the Warriors claimed a 2-1 advantage on an RBI single.
D'Youville took their first lead of the game in the top of the fifth inning, plating three runs to take the final 4-2 scoreline. Freshman Gianna Adamo tied the game on an RBI double that scored Pepke. Adamo scored the go-ahead run two batters later on a passed ball. Senior Mikaela Milleville doubled D'Youville's lead when she also scored on a passed ball in the same at-bat.
Sophomore Lauren Booth (2-0) got the nod in the D'Youville circle this afternoon … In 4.0 innings, Booth was tagged with only one earned run on seven while striking out two batters … Freshman Sarah Parzych came on in relief of Booth and shut down the Nyack offense, surrendering no runs on one hit.
The Saints return to action tomorrow with two games, one against Ohio Northern at 10:15 a.m. and the second against Penn St.-Hazelton at 3:15 p.m. Both games will take place in Clermont, Fla.
