After a near three-week break between games due to COVID-19 protocols, head coach Danny Glover and the D'Youville women's basketball team will return to East Coast Conference action this weekend with a pair of home contests with Roberts Wesleyan. The Saints and Red Hawks will meet for the first time this season.
Last Time Out - On Jan. 31, the Saints picked up their first victory at the NCAA Division II level, knocking off the Clarion Golden Eagles, 72-64, in Clarion, Pa. Sophomore guard Sara Pfeiffer drove the Saints offense, dropping 21 points and grabbing eight boards, while going 7-for-8 from the free-throw line. For her weekend performance, where she scored 19.5 points per game, Pfeiffer was tabbed ECC Player of the Week for the first week of February. For the 2019-20 AMCC Newcomer of the Year, it was her first Player of the Week honor at D'Youville. Two more Saints posted double-figure efforts in the landmark victory, as junior guard Danielle Hore nearly picked up a double-double, recording 14 points and nine assists, while sophomore guard/forward Haley Kirisits also tallied 14 points. D'Youville improved to 1-3 on the season and currently sit at fifth in the ECC standings at 0-2, behind the fourth place Red Hawks at 1-4.
Home Cooking - Friday's tilt will begin a stretch where the Saints only play one game away from the College Center Gym the rest of the season. Fellow ECC foe Mercy comes to Buffalo next weekend for the final regular season game of the year while the Red Hawks and Saints will squeeze in one more game on Wednesday, Feb. 26, making-up the matchup originally scheduled for Feb. 3.
D'Youville by the Numbers - Pfeiffer leads the Saints and the conference in scoring (17.0 ppg), followed by Hore (12.0 ppg), and Kirisits (7.0 ppg). Sophomore forward Sarah Wittek paces the team in rebounds (5.8 reb/g), followed by Pfeiffer (4.5 reb/g) and Hore (4.3). As a team, D'Youville is shooting 31.4 percent from the field (Fifth in ECC), 30.5 percent from beyond the arc (Third in ECC), and averages 54.0 points per game (Fourth in ECC).
Roberts Wesleyan at a Glance - The month of February has not been kind to the Red Hawks, as they have dropped five of their six games and are in the midst of a two-game skid. Three of their defeats have come at the hands of Daemen, including their last game on Feb. 17, falling 58-42 at Lumsden Gymnasium. Three Red Hawks are averaging double-figures this season in scoring, paced by forward Emily Miller (14.1 ppg, fifth in the ECC), guard Sara Nady (11.3 ppg), and forward Taryn Wilson (10.3 ppg). Miller is nearly averaging a double-double this season with a team and league-high 9.7 rebounds per game.
