CHILI, N.Y. - The D'Youville women's basketball team hung around for four quarters Sunday afternoon but were not able to overcome Roberts Wesleyan in East Coast Conference road action. The 75-66 defeat, the second of the season and first in the ECC, drops the Saints to 6-2 and 1-1 in league play.
D'Youville took control early, jumping out to a 20-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. Sophomore guard Sara Pfeiffer, who dropped a career-high 40 points in Friday evening's league victory over Bridgeport, led the Saints' offense with eight first-quarter points.
The Redhawks (4-4, 1-1 ECC) answered in the middle frames with 23 and 24 points in the second and third quarters, respectively. An 11-2 run to begin the second quarter helped Roberts Wesleyan dig out of their early hole and they left the Saints trailing by one at halftime, 34-33.
Needing to flip a three-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter, D'Youville was only able to muster up 11 points in the final 10 minutes as Roberts Wesleyan held the Saints to 26-percent (5-19 FG) shooting in the quarter. Freshman guard Haleigh Schafer scored D'Youville's final two buckets, the second with 2:25 left in the game to pull the Saints back to seven points of RWC at 73-66.
Three Saints landed in double-figures in scoring led by Shafer's 22 points (9-22 FG), followed by Pfeiffer's 18 points (7-18 FG) and freshman guard Stella Mollica's 12 points (5-7 FG) … D'Youville shot 35.1-percent from the field but were outshot by Robert Wesleyan's 46-percent clip.
The Saints struggled from downtown, only converting on six of their 30 attempts while the Redhawks shot an efficient 4-for-10 from beyond the three-point arc … Roberts Wesleyan also controlled the glass, outrebounding the Saints, 52-39.
The Saints will continue ECC road play on Friday, Dec. 17 when they travel south to take on the University of the District of Columbia. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m.
