VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The D'Youville men's soccer team opened up postseason play Thursday afternoon, taking on No. 1 seed Maine-Ft. Kent in the USCAA Small College Championship. The No. 5 seeded Saints fell behind early and struggled to solve the Fort Kent defense in the 3-0 defeat. The loss drops the Saints to 4-10-3 on the season.
The Bengals (11-1-2) got on the board first in the 18th minute when Adil Iggoute beat freshman goalkeeper Ethan Picard. Iggoute was assisted on a long pass from his goalkeeper, John Amoah, to break the early deadlock. Offensively, Maine-Ft. Kent controlled the opening 45 minutes with 15 total shots (five on goal) to D'Youville's three. Senior Nick Dumond and freshman, Luis Felipe Santos registered shots on goal for the Saints in the first half.
Iggoute threatened the D'Youville defense in the second half, and he broke through twice more in the final five minutes. His 87th-minute goal was headed home on a corner kick from Ronaldo Watson, and three minutes later, Iggoute grabbed his hat trick and put the game out of reach by slotting home a penalty kick.
The Saints' offense continued to struggle, breaking through the Bengal's backline in the second half as D'Youville only placed one shot on goal via senior Jake Kowalewski.
Picard collected 10 saves between the D'Youville posts … The Bengals outshot the Saints 34-6 with a 13-3 advantage in the shots on goal category.
The Saints return to Pool A action in the USCAA Championship on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 12:15 against Bryant & Stratton-Albany.
