BUFFALO, N.Y. - The D'Youville men's soccer team returned to Dobson Field for a home match with Staten Island, falling 1-0 on a second-half goal Saturday afternoon in East Coast Conference action. The setback drops the Saints to 4-6-2 and 0-5 in league play.
In the first half, freshman Luis Felipe Santos created D'Youville's best scoring opportunity. The Brazilian native navigated through a couple of Dolphin defenders before firing a shot off of the crossbar from about 25 yards out. Santos' long-range effort would've given D'Youville the game's first goal.
Larry Diggs' unassisted goal in the 55th minute was the difference in the low-scoring affair. Diggs pounced on a fumbled save from freshman goalkeeper Ethan Picard and then drove the ball into the bottom of the net.
The Dolphins outshot the Saints, 15-10, with a 7-5 shots on goal advantage … Senior Nick Dumond (2), sophomore Avery Grondin (1), freshman Paulo Carvalho (1), and freshman Nico Susbilla each registered shots on goal for D'Youvillle … Picard collected six saves in net for the Saints.
The Saints continue home ECC play next Saturday, October 16, when they host the University of the District of Columbia. Kick-off from Dobson Field is set for 1 p.m.
