CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. - After a full week away from competition, the D'Youville men's soccer team continued East Coast Conference action, falling 1-0 to Queens (N.Y.) Saturday evening. The loss sees the Saints slip to 4-8-3 overall and 0-7-1 in league play this season.
A quiet first half saw back-and-forth play from both sides as each team placed three shots on goal but played to a 0-0 score at the intermission. Freshman Luis Felipe Santos tallied two of D'Youville's attempts on frame while senior Nick Dumond placed his only attempt in the opening 45 minutes on goal as well. D'Youville tested Queens' goalkeeper, Dario Cruz, early with long-range efforts from Dumond (1') and Santos (2'). Santos' second shot on target (22') also came from outside the 18-yard box.
The Knights (7-7 overall, 3-5 ECC) wasted little time taking the lead in the second half. Erik Hernandez placed his shot in the top left corner of the D'Youville net to break the deadlock in the 47th minute. Senior Jake Kowalewski nearly picked up the quick answer for the Saints but his shot from inside the 18-yard box was blocked in the 53rd minute. Santos added another opportunity in the 69th minute but his attempt from just outside the six-yard box was also blocked. Santos tried again from long distance in the 83rd minute, rifling a shot from the far left side of the 18-yard box but it was stopped by Cruz in the lower right corner.
Felipe Santos recorded a team-high five shots in the match … freshman goalkeeper and reigning ECC Rookie of the Week Ethan Picard collected six saves in between the D'Youville pipes … Picard's six saves give him a league-leading 70 saves on the season.
The Saints will conclude league play and the 2021 regular season next Saturday, Nov. 6 when they host Mercy at Dobson Field. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
