Box Score BUFFALO, N.Y. – A header from Vitor Gomes in double overtime lifted the first-place Firebirds of UDC past the D'Youville men's soccer team 2-1 on Saturday.
Gomes's game-winner came in the 108th minute. The forward headed home a cross from Robert Giroux. Saints' goalkeeper Ethan Picard came out to challenge the cross but couldn't get a hand on it before Gomes's header floated into the net.
After a scoreless 70 minutes, both sides struck within a minute of each other.
D'Youville (4-7-2, 0-6 ECC) struck first in the 74th minute when Felipe Santos nutmegged a defender to control the ball, got around another defender, and placed his shot inside the far post. The goal was Santos's seventh of the season and was the first for the Saints since September 21 at Pitt-Johnstown.
The lead was short-lived as Gomes knocked in his first of the afternoon when he controlled a misplayed ball by the Saints' backline and fired the ball high and past Picard.
UDC (7-4-1, 5-0-1 ECC) had chances to win the game in regulation. The Firebirds recorded five shots in the last 10 minutes of regulation, with a few of those going just wide or high. D'Youville was limited to two shots after scoring and did not record a shot in either overtime period.
