BUFFALO, N.Y. - The D'Youville women's volleyball team kicked off a four-match homestand in East Coast Conference play Wednesday evening, hosting Daemen and falling in three straight sets, 25-10, 25-13, 25-23. The third consecutive loss in league play moves the Saints to 2-14 on the season and 1-5 in the ECC.
D'Youville jumped out to an early 3-1 advantage in the first set after a service ace from freshman Emma Wlostowski and a kill from sophomore Sara Wittek. Despite the early advantage, the guests responded with a 13-1 run to take a commanding lead in the first.
The Saints were able to cut down the big runs in the second set but could not stop a powerful Daemen attack that followed a .600 hitting first set with a .500 hitting percentage in the second frame.
Down to their last life in the third set, the Saints picked up their play. Back-to-back 3-0 runs late in the third set gave the Saints a 22-21 advantage after trailing 20-16. Two kills from freshman Emily Fischer highlighted the 7-1 turnaround. After taking the late lead, the Wildcats, who are undefeated in league play, put their foot back on the gas pedal and ended the match by taking four out of the last five points.
A trio of Saints led the team in kills with five each from freshman Eve Musielak, sophomore Brianna Damstetter, and freshman Jaycee Karelus … Musielak also paced D'Youville in digs with 13 while Wlostowski followed up with nine.
The Saints will continue their homestand in non-conference action next Tuesday, October 19, with Edinboro. The first serve from the College Center Gym is set for 6 p.m.
