DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - The D'Youville women's volleyball team returned to East Coast Conference action Sunday afternoon, falling 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-22) at Mercy. The loss sees the Saints fall to 2-13 overall and 1-4 in league play.
Trailing 23-19, D'Youville climbed back into the first set, using a 4-0 run to get back to within one point of the Mavericks at 23-22. Two kills from freshman Olivia Jarosz and freshman Nathalya Rocha with two assists from freshman Emma Wlostowski highlighted the run for the Saints.
The Mavericks dominated the second set, 25-14, using a .435 hitting percentage to take the commanding two-set lead. Seven attack errors and three service errors plagued D'Youville in the second set.
The Saints were edged out once again by Mercy in the third and decisive set. Falling behind 23-19 once more, the Saints used another 4-0 run to make things interesting. Kills from sophomore Sara Wittek and freshman Emily Fischer coupled with attack errors from Mercy, put the Saints one point away from the Mavericks at 23-22. Despite the comeback attempt, the hosts would take the final two points to leave the Saints empty-handed on the afternoon.
Freshman Eve Musielak paced the Saints with 10 kills, also a team-high in points, while Rocha led the team with a .325 hitting percentage … Freshman Samantha Killane led D'Youville with 16 digs followed by 11 digs from Rocha and 10 digs from Wlostowski.
The Saints return to the College Center Gymnasium on Wednesday, October 15, for a home ECC match with Daemen. The first serve is slated for 7 p.m.
