Women's Basketball Punches Ticket to Postseason in Blowout over Mounties

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team capped off their regular season with a blowout win over Mount Aloysius Mounties on Saturday afternoon by the final score of 79-41 as the women clinched their spot in the AMCC playoffs.

D'Youville came out firing on both ends of the court, leading 8-0 through the first 4:24 until the Mounties scored their first basket of the game. Mount Aloysius would catch up quickly to trail 8-10 with 4:30 to go in the first, but the Spartans would close out the first on a 10-2 scoring run to lead 20-10 after one. 

The second quarter set the tone for the remainder of the game with the Spartans dominating at both ends. Sara Pfeiffer (Olean, NY/Olean) and Sarah Wittek (Elma, NY/Iroquois) would begin the quarter with three-point plays to extend the lead to 16. Following a Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) jumper, Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) would score five consecutive points for the women to extend the lead to 33-10 as the the women continued to shutout the Mounties in the second. That dominating play would continue through to the end of the quarter as Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) and Becca Krenzer (Pavilion, NY/Batavia-Notre Dame) closed out the half with jumpers with D'Youville leading 48-18 at the half.

It was a similar story in the third quarter with the Spartans continuing to build on their lead. Haley Kirisits (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) hit a jumper with 6:21 to go in the third to make it a 54-18 D'Youville lead. Brigid McKeone (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) would follow up with four consecutive points as the D'Youville lead increased to 40. Emmalea Erlandson (West Valley, NY/Ellicottville) would sink a pair of free throws and Hanna Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) drilled a three to end the third with the Spartans in full control of the game at 67-30.

In the fourth, the D'Youville bench got greatly involved in the game and saw extended minutes. Caroline Szuflita (Eden, NY/Eden) would score her first career points all in-a-row with a layup and three to put the women up 74-39. Wozniak would then add a layup with Elyse VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) hitting her first career three to close out the scoring in the game as the Spartans won their fifth-consecutive game by the final of 79-41.

Hore led the way with 10 points, 16 rebounds, and five assists in the game. Pfeiffer scored 13 with Kirisits and Wittek each scoring nine. Elizabeth Bradley (Lockport, NY/ Starpoint) added three along with VanAuken. Alton also chipped in with eight as McKeone added six points and six rebounds.

Szuflita scored a five points, as did Wozniak in extended minutes. Krenzer chipped in with four while Carpenter scored a pair with five rebounds. Erlandson also grabbed five boards with Ashley Schenkel (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) grabbing four rebounds with two assists and two steals. Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) blocked a team-high five blocks in the win.

D'Youville will next host Penn State-Altoona in the first round of the AMCC playoffs this Tuesday, February 25 at 7:00pm. The Spartans are the three seed while the Lions are the six seed.
