D'Youville Suffers Pair of Losses in Florida

Kissimmee, FL – The D'Youville softball team nearly captured their first win of the season on Sunday morning, falling to the Plattsburgh State Cardinals 4-3 and the McDaniel Green Terror 12-4.

Game one against Plattsburgh saw the Spartans get out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) walked with two outs and was moved over to third following a Brittaney Goodrich (Eden, NY/Eden) double. Megan Meyer (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) then singled, scoring Evans and gave D'Youville the 1-0 lead.

Plattsburgh would tie the game in the bottom of the fourth and then take the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 3-1 advantage. The Spartans would respond in the top of the seventh.

Rylie Russo (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) led off the inning with a walk. Two batters later, Meyer singled to put two runners on base. Alexa Haberer (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) then came to bat, doubling to center field and scoring the two baserunners, tying the game at 3-3 as they headed into the bottom of the inning.

In their first at-bat of the bottom of the inning, the Cardinals hit a walk-off home run to win the game 4-3.

Meyer and Haberer led the team with two hits each with Goodrich, Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint), Mikaela Milleville (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield), and Rachel Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) all tallying a hit each. The top five batters in the Spartan's lineup each reached base via walks.

Haberer got the start, pitching six innings and allowing two earned runs with five strikeouts.

The second game of the day saw the Spartans jump out to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Evans began the inning by singling, moving to second with a Purucker walk. Milleville would then reach on an error to lead the bases.

Colan then came to bat, driving in Evans for a 1-0 lead. Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence) duplicated Colan's at-bat, singling in to drive in a run of her own. Two batters later, Meyer would bring two more o her teammates across the plate for a 4-0 D'Youville lead.

McDaniel would then go on a run, scoring in each of the five-remaining innings. They tacked on four runs in the third to tie the game, three in the fourth, one in each of the fifth and sixth innings, and three in the seventh on their way to at 12-4 victory.

Carney and Purucker led the team with two hits each as Colan, Evans, Russo, and Meyer had one each. Meyer tallied a team high two RBI while Carney and Purucker each had a walk. Goodrich pitched 4.2 innings with Haberer coming in for 2.1 of relief.

D'Youville will next play St. Lawrence and Maine Farmington on Monday, March 18 beginning at 9:30am.
