Softball Begins Season with Doubleheader in Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Kissimmee, FL – The D'Youville softball team led off their 2019 season in sunny Kissimmee, FL on Saturday morning as they lost their opening doubleheader with the scores of 6-0 to the Geneva Golden Tornadoes and 16-1 to the Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops.

Geneva took control of the game one of the day by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning for a quick lead. D'Youville would get two runners on base in the third, but were unable to bring any of them home. Three additional runs were tacked on by the Golden Tornadoes between innings four and five with the Spartans unable to respond, losing 6-0.

Six different Spartans tallied a hit each against Geneva. Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) led the team with a pair of walks. Alexa Haberer (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) pitched 6.0 innings in the game, striking out seven.

Game two of the doubleheader didn't fare much better for the women. Ohio Wesleyan put a pair of runs up in the second, adding one in the fourth to lead 3-0. D'Youville remained in the game until the fifth where the Battling Bishops added five more runs for an 8-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence) doubled with one out. Rylie Russo (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) then singled to third but an error from the Ohio Wesleyan second baseman allowed Carney to score, making it 8-1.

Unfortunately for the Spartans, an eight-run sixth inning put their hopes of victory to bed as they lost game two 16-1.

Carney and Russo led the team with a pair of hits each, with Megan Meyer (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) tallying her first of the season. Mikaela Milleville (Nagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) got her first start of the season and tallied her first career hit as well. Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) would also record her first hit.

Brittaney Goodrich (Eden, NY/Eden) got her first start of the season and went 5.0 innings in the loss. Haberer came in for 0.2 innings of relief and Mary Andreano (Greece, NY/Greece Athena) came in for 0.1 inning of work, recording her first career strikeout.

The next pair of games for the women comes tomorrow as they Play Plattsburgh at 9:30am, followed by McDaniel at 11:45am.
