DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. — D'Youville (11-10, 1-2 ECC) fell to Mercy University (4-7, 1-2 ECC) twice on Saturday in a doubleheader played at Smith Field.
Mercy took an early lead in the first inning when the Mavericks scored on a sacrifice bunt. The inning ended with Mercy leading 1–0. In the third inning, the Mavericks added another run. Mercy reached base on an error and later scored on a single. The Mavericks extended their lead to 2–0 by the end of the inning. The fifth inning saw Mercy increase its advantage to 3–0.
D'Youville responded in the sixth inning.
Jorja Sandilands (Brooklin, Ontario / Brooklin) singled and advanced on an error, later scoring on a single by
Gabby Moreno (San Diego, Calif. / Rancho Buena Vista). The score was 4–1 in favor of the Mavericks after the sixth.
In a tense seventh inning, D'Youville closed the gap.
Mikayla Hussar (West Seneca, N.Y. / West Seneca West) scored on a double by Sandilands, and Sandilands crossed the plate on a single by
Summer Clark (Williamsville, N.Y. / Williamsville East). Despite the rally, D'Youville fell just short, and the game concluded with a final score of Mercy 4, D'Youville 3.
Clark pitched a complete game for D'Youville, allowing eight hits and four runs over 6 innings. She recorded two strikeouts and did not give up any walks. Hussar recorded two hits and scored one run, contributing to the team's offensive efforts. Sandilands led the team with two runs scored and added two hits, including a double, while driving in one run.
Frankie Morris (Lancaster, N.Y. / Lancaster) reached base three times, hitting a double, walking once, and was hit by a pitch, showcasing her on-base ability.
In game two of the doubleheader, D'Youville fell to Mercy University in a close 6–5 encounter. D'Youville managed to tally eight hits, including four doubles and a home run, but it was not enough to secure the win.
The game remained scoreless through the first three innings, with both teams unable to capitalize on early opportunities. The Mavericks broke the deadlock in the fourth scoring on a fielder's choice, making it 1–0. D'Youville responded in the fifth inning as
Frankie Morris scored on a fielder's choice by
Sophia Arno (Clarence Center, N.Y. / The Brook Hill School). The scoreboard read 1–1 at the end of the fifth.
In the sixth inning, D'Youville took the lead with a two-run homer by
Jorja Sandilands, followed by a run scored by
Summer Clark, putting them ahead 4–1. Mercy narrowed the gap to 4–3 with a home run and an RBI single. In the seventh,
Danielle Fenlong (Georgetown, Ontario / Christ the King SS) scored on an RBI single by
Annie Jorgenson (Victoria, B.C. / Belmont SS), extending D'Youville's lead to 5–3. However, the Mavericks surged back with three runs in the bottom of the inning, including a two-RBI single, to clinch the victory.
Kendal Lehnen (Sherrill, N.Y. / Vernon Verona Sherrill) pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs with one walk and one strikeout.
Hailee Jenkins (Ontario, Canada / Fenelon Falls SS) entered in relief, pitching 1 1/3 innings, surrendering three hits and one earned run while walking one.
