Spartans Play Final Road Game of 2018-19 Season

Hamburg, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team played their final road game of the season on Wednesday evening, falling to the Hilbert Hawks by the final score of 72-53.

D'Youville led early at 5-3 through the first three minutes of the game over the Hawks. After Hilbert took over the lead at 9-7, the Spartans were able to regain the lead with a Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) three with 4:54 to go in the first. From that point on, the Hawks would go on a run and outscore the Spartans 9-2 through the rest of the quarter to lead 18-12 at halftime.

Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) would put the Spartans within a basket at 20-18 after nearly three minutes of play in the second. Hilbert would regain their six-point lead and turn it into an eight-point lead at 30-22 with 2:36 to go in the half. Trailing by seven with under a minute remaining in the first half, Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) would hit a jumper to cut the deficit to five as D'Youville trailed 33-28 heading into halftime.

The Hawks began to pull away once the third quarter got underway. They expanded their lead to 13 through the first four minutes of the second half, leading 44-31. A Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) free throw put the Spartans back to within nine, but Hilbert would regain their double-digit lead by the end of the quarter, leading 54-43.

With the first six points of the fourth quarter, Hilbert extended their lead to 17 before the Spartans would score 2:30 into the final quarter of play. The deficit continued to grow for D'Youville as the quarter ticked away and the Spartans were unable to recover, suffering a loss to the Hawks by the final score of 72-53.

Hore led the team with 12 points and 11 rebounds in the game. Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) added 11 points with four boards while June scored eight points in addition to her seven rebounds. Both Smith and Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, WA/Coupeville) scored three points.

Hanna Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) scored a team high seven points off the bench with Field adding six and four rebounds. Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) scored three points while Alexandria McBride (Elma, NY/Iroquois) and Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) each grabbed one rebound in the game.

The next game for the women will be their final of the 2018-19 season as they host the Franciscan Barons this Saturday, February 16 at 2:00pm for the women's senior day game.
