D'Youville Falls to Medaille in Home Finale

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team lost their final home game of the season on Wednesday evening, falling to the Medaille Meavericks by the final score of 77-48.

It was an even battle between the two teams in the first quarter as they were tied at 6-6 nearly three minutes in. For the next three minutes, the score remained tied as the teams struggled on offense. Medaille would then break the scoring drought before the Spartans would come back to take a 15-14 lead with 0:53 to go in the first. They would hold onto that lead to the end of the quarter, leading 15-14 after one.

Tied at 17 after two minutes of play, the Mavericks scored the next 11 points to lead 28-17 through six minutes of play in the second. After falling behind by 10, D'Youville would close the game to five following two Briana Dotterweich (Depew, NY/Depew) free throws with 1:25 to go in the half. Medaille would then score the final four points of the half to take a 34-25 lead at halftime.

Medaille began to increase their lead over D'Youville in the third quarter. Their lead extended to 14 as the Spartans scored just four points through the first 7:35 of the third. Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) accounted for 80% of the offense in the third, scoring eight points. Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) added a layup to end the quarter with the Spartans trailing the Mavericks 51-35.

In the fourth quarter, Medaille put the game away. They outscored D'Youville 26-13 in the quarter as they went on to with 77-48.

Smith led the team with 14 points and 11 rebounds to record a double-double. Evans nearly had one of her own with eight points and nine boards while Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) had five points, six rebounds, and a team high four assists. CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) grabbed a team high four boards off the bench while Dotterweich and Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) each had four points.

The women will conclude their season this Saturday, February 17 as they travel to La Roche. Game time against the Redhawks is 4:00pm.
