D'Youville Sweeps Season Series over Behrend with Win

Box Score

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team picked up their second win of the season over Penn State-Behrend by defeating the Lions 74-69 Wednesday evening.

Behrend was out in front in the first 4:16 of the game before a Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) hit a three to give the women a 13-12 lead. The Spartan lead then extended to eight after a Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) layup soon after. D'Youville maintained their lead over Behrend, taking a 25-17 advantage after one.

With the first basket of the second quarter, the Lions closed their deficit to six points. However six was the closest Behrend would come to the Spartan's lead as they responded with three consecutive baskets for a 31-19 lead on a Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) made jumper. June hit back-to-back threes with under two minutes to go in the half, opening up a 15-point lead before the Lions would trim it to 12 and D'Youville led 45-33 at the half.

Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) helped bring the Spartans to their largest lead of the game of 17 after scoring seven straight points to open up the third quarter. The lead then grew to 19 on a Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, WA/Coupeville) three, making the score 61-42 D'Youville. Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) closed out the third with a three, extending the Spartan lead to 20.

The Spartans would need every bit of their 20-point lead in the fourth quarter to hold off the Lions. Behrend outscored D'Youville 25-10 in the final quarter and pulled to within four with 0:48 remaining in regulation. However Alton came up clutch for the women in the final minute, making three big free throws to help clinch the 74-69 win for the Spartans.

Four women scored in double-figures against Behrend on Wednesday. June recorded a team high 16 points, followed by Smith and Field who each scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Alton had eight points and eight rebounds while tying Smith with a team high five assists.

Both Campbell and Kellner had threes off the bench while CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) and Briana Dotterweich (Depew, NY/Depew) had two points. Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) added a rebound and an assist.

The women will look to build on their win as they host Pitt.-Greensburg this Saturday, January 27 at 1:00pm.
