Three Women Score in Double-Figures as D'Youville falls to Mount Aloysius

Box Score

Cresson, PA – The D'Youville women's basketball team lost their fifth straight conference game on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Mount Aloysius Mounties by the final score of 71-50.

D'Youville took the lead first with a layup from Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS), but the Mounties would then take the lead at 6-3 just a few minutes later. The Spartans would come back to tie the game at seven before going up by four at 11-7 on another Field layup and then extend their lead to six on a Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) layup. In the final 3:33 of the first, Mount Aloysius would go on a 13-2 run and lead 24-19 after one.

For as explosive as the first quarter was offensively, it was the complete opposite in the second. The two teams combined for 14 points but D'Youville was able to close the gap to two at 28-26 on a Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) three. Mount Aloysius would answer with a three of their own with 2:26 to go in the quarter and that would be the final basket of the half as the Mounties led 31-26 after 20 minutes of play.

Mount Aloysius began to create some separation between themselves and the Spartans, leading by seven at 36-29 after just over two minutes of action in the third. The Mounties would increase that advantage to eight and then 11 as the quarter wore down as D'Youville trailed 49-38 through three quarters.

Through the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, Mount Aloysius outscored the Spartans 9-4 to begin to put the game away. The deficit grew to 19 for D'Youville with 2:09 to go in regulation and it was too much for the women to overcome as they fell to the host Mounties 71-50.

June continued to be extremely effective for the Spartans on offense as she recorded a team high 16 points, adding seven rebounds. Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) recorded team highs of 11 rebounds and four assists, with her 11 boards becoming a new career high. Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) and Field each scored in double-figures with Smith scoring 10 and Field recording 11. Smith also had five boards and Field had six.

Carpenter took advantage of increased playing time with eight points and four rebounds as Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, WA/Coupeville) grabbed five rebounds. CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) grabbed six rebounds and Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) had four rebounds, three rebounds, and two assists.

The next game for the women comes this Wednesday, January 24 as they host the Penn State-Behrend Lions at 8:00pm.
