Mavericks Take First Meeting of Season Over Spartans

Box Score

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team lost their fourth straight game Wednesday evening after they were defeated by the Medaille Mavericks 74-63.

Medaille got out to a 10-4 advantage over the Spartans after a made three just over three minutes into the game. That lead grew to 11 and then 14 as the quarter wore on with the Mavericks controlling the game. Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) added a free throw with 0:04 left in the first to make the score 23-10 at the end of one.

Both teams struggled to score in the beginning of the second quarter as Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) broke the drought after nearly two minutes of play. Five straight points from Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) pulled D'Youville back to a single-digit deficit with halftime drawing closer. Two Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) free throws made it a seven-point game before the Mavericks grew their lead back to eight as they led 35-27 at halftime.

Evans had two free throws early in the second half for D'Youville to make the deficit six at 39-33 followed by three points from June to make it a five-point game. June began to shoulder the offensive load for the Spartans with four additional points to make the score 41-40 Medaille before the Mavericks scored seven straight to extend their lead. The Mavericks went on a big scoring run to close out the third as they led 56-43 heading into the fourth.

D'Youville was able to close the gap to as little as seven, but the Mavericks had separated themselves by too much for the Spartans to come back. Medaille would go on to take the first meeting of the season over D'Youville by the final score of 74-63.

June led the team with a career high 21 points while Evans grabbed a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) came close to grabbing a double-double of her own with eight points and nine rebounds while Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, WA/Coupeville) grabbed nine rebounds and dished out a team high four assists.

Briana Dotterweich (Depew, NY/Depew) had a very strong game off the bench with four points, six rebounds, and two assists. Carpenter added four points and CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) grabbed three rebounds. Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) scored five points.

The next game for the women will come this Saturday, January 20 as they travel to Mount Alyosius. Game time against the Mounties is 3:00pm.
