Women End First Half of Spring Training on High Note

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Clermont, FL – The D'Youville softball team split their third day of spring training on Monday afternoon, losing to the Kalamazoo Hornets 7-5 and defeating the Thomas Night Hawks 4-1.

Kalamazoo did all of their damage in the second inning of game number one of the day. They scored all seven of their runs in the second for a 7-0 lead, leaving the Spartans a large hole to climb out of.

In the bottom of the third, D'Youville was able to put their first run on the board. Megan Meyer (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) hit a single down the right field with one out, followed by a single from Rylie Russo (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) two batters later to move Meyer to third. Hannah Turek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) then came to bat and drove in Meyer with a single for the team's first run.

D'Youville was able to get several runs across in the bottom of the fifth. Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence) singled with an out, followed by triple from Russo to drive in Carney. Turek then came up and drove in Russo with a ground out, making the game 7-3. Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) then reached base on an error to be pinch ran for by Therese Losardo (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster). Losardo would score in the next at-bat as Lauren Gawlak (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) doubled to center, scoring Losardo and making the game 7-4.

Down to their last chance, D'Youville was able to close the gap some in the bottom of the seventh. Turek and Purucker each had singles to lead off the inning and Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angles Academy) singled two batters later to score Turek. However the Spartans were not able to come back from the early deficit as they fell to Kalamazoo 7-5.

Continuing her red hot hitting, Carney led the team with three hits and a run scored. Russo and Turek each accounted for two hits, while Turek led the team with two RBI. Eight different players had hits for the Spartans, while all five runs were scored by different players. Turek went seven innings in the game, striking out three.

The second game of the day saw D'Youville take the early lead and set the tone for the remainder of the game. Carney led off the game with a walk and then scored on a single from Turek, quickly making the game 1-0. Thomas would then score a run in the bottom of the second to tie the game.

The top of the order again combined for runs in the top of the third, helping give the D'Youville the lead again. Both Carney and Russo had bunt singles to begin the inning, with Russo stealing second, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Turek came to bat and again singled, scoring Carney and Russo, giving D'Youville the lead at 3-1.

An inning later, the Spartans would continue to build on their lead. Cameron Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third in the next two at-bats. Then a ground out to short from Carney drove in Colan, making it a 4-1 lead for D'Youville. That lead was enough for the Spartans for the remainder of the game as D'Youville defeated Thomas 4-1.

Continuing to be the driving forces of the offense, Carney and Turek led the team with two hits each. Carney scored two runs while Turek led the team with three RBI. Sierra Belkota (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) recorded her first hit of the season while Colan led the team with two walks.

Alexis Dymond (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) got the start for the Spartans, going 2.1 innings and allowed only one run. Turek then game in and shut the door by allowing no runs and surrendering no walks in 4.2 innings, picking up her first win of the season.

The women have Tuesday off and will resume their spring training schedule on Wednesday, March 22 as they play Elmhurst at 9am and Clarkson at 11:30am.
