Spartans Drop A Pair of Games on Second Day in Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Clermont, FL – The D'Youville softball team took to day two of spring training and received back-to-back losses as they were defeated by the Carthage Reds 7-2 and the Colby Mules 9-1 on Sunday.

Carthage was on the board first in the top of the second, and then doubled their lead in the top of the fourth for a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, the Spartans would strike to tie the game.

Hannah Turek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) singled to start the bottom half of the fourth. Following Turek, Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) belted a double to center field, scoring Turek and making it a one-run game. The Spartans continued to put the bat on the ball as Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angles Academy) singled to left center, moving Purucker to third.

After Marino reached base, Therese Losardo (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) pinch ran and helped generate a run. Both Losardo and Purucker took off, executing the double steal as Purucker crossed the plate and tied the game at 2-2.

The Reds would go into the sixth and untie the game in a big way. They scored three runs on four hits to make the game 5-2. They then added two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh and Carthage would defeat the Spartans by the final score of 7-2.

Lauren Gawlak (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) led the team with two hits, while four other players recorded one. In the circle, Turek went seven innings and struck out four.

The second game of the day for D'Youville saw a similar fate for the Spartans. Colby took a commanding lead in the bottom of the second by scoring five runs. D'Youville put up their first run in the top of the fourth as Megan Meyer (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) reached base on an error, followed by a Gawlak single. Ashley Carney (Clarence, NY/Clarence) then singled; driving in Meyer for the Spartan's first run.

A four-run sixth fifth inning would put the game out of reach in favor of the Mules as Colby defeated D'Youville by the final of 9-1.

Carney led the team in hits for the second time in two days with two hits. Five different Spartans had a hit in the game, including one by Kayla Jackson (Salamanca, NY/Salamanca). Alexis Dymond (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West) went 4.2 innings, striking out two.

The next pair of games for the women come on Monday, March 20 as they play Kalamazoo at 2pm and Thomas at 4:30pm.
