D'Youville Women Nearly Upset La Roche on Senior Day

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team concluded their 2016-17 season on Saturday afternoon with a loss to the La Roche Redhawks by the final score of 72-57.

La Roche went up 7-0 on the Spartans nearly four minutes into the game, extending their lead to 14-4 just a few minutes later. D'Youville would begin to chip away at the lead, starting with a Hannah Simone (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) three. The Spartans would close out the quarter on an 8-2 scoring run and trail after the first 16-12.

To start the second, the Redhawks regained their eight-point lead over the Spartans. D'Youville would begin to chip away at the lead as Simone knocked down another three to close the gap to one at 23-22. La Roche would respond with and create a five-point advantage, but that advantage would fade away after an Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf) three to tie the game at 30-30 with 1:11 left in the half. In the final minute of the half, Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) hit a pair of free throws to give D'Youville a 32-30 lead going into the half.

D'Youville continued to hold their lead as the third quarter of play began. The Redhawks tied it at 36-36 and would go on to take the lead back at 39-38 halfway through the quarter. Throughout the third, the teams would go back and forth until the end of the quarter when La Roche would take a six-point lead into the final quarter of play.

With 7:22 left it became a four-point game on a Korona and-one as the Spartans trailed 54-50. However the undefeated Redhawks would step their game up to another level and begin to pull away. They outscored D'Youville 16-6 over the next five minutes, increasing their late lead. La Roche would extend their lead to 15 as they closed out their undefeated conference schedule by defeating the Spartans by the final of 72-57.

In her final game as a Spartan, Korona led the team in scoring with 21 points and tied her career high with 18 rebounds. Adding seven points and a team high three steals, Cochrane also closed out her career as a Spartan. Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) was second on the team in scoring with 11 points.

Off the bench, Simone contributed seven points and CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) had five. Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) recorded a team high five assists. Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) had four rebounds off the bench and Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) chipped in two rebounds. Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) also had two rebounds in the game.
