Women Lose Road Finale at Medaille

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team suffered a loss in their final road game of the season, falling to the Medaille Mavericks by the final score of 90-70.

Medaille got out to a 7-0 lead over the Spartans with just over a minute gone by in the game. Following a Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) three, the Mavericks went on a 13-2 run to take a 20-5 lead. In the final 3:38 of the quarter, D'Youville would outscore Medaille 9-5 to reduce their deficit and trail 25-14 after the first.

To open the second quarter, the Mavericks increased their lead to 15 points over the Spartans. That lead increased to 17 halfway through the second, but another Magee three and a Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) layup cut the lead to 12. Medaille would continue to execute on offense as they went up by 20 over D'Youville and would go into halftime leading 48-30.

The second half was opened by Medaille scoring the first 12 points to take a 60-30 lead over D'Youville. As the third went on, the Mavericks continued to keep their lead over the Spartans. Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf) scored back-to-back layups as D'Youville trailed by 26, but when the quarter ended Medaille led 75-45.

D'Youville saved their best offensive output for the final quarter of play. The team outscored the Mavericks 25-15 in the quarter, but it wasn't enough to get completely back in the game. Medaille would go on to defeat the Spartans by the final score of 90-70.

The Spartans had four players scoring in double-figures. Magee and Korona shared the scoring lead with 13 points each. CeDrice Howard (University Place, WA/Curtis) added 10 points with Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) scoring a team high 11 points off the bench.

Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) tied for the team lead with six rebounds while Korona added six of her own. Hannah Simone (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) had five rebounds to match Cochrane's five. Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) had six points off the bench with Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) adding two points, two rebounds, two steals and an assist.

The next game for the women will be the final of their season as they host the La Roche Redhawks on Saturday, February 18 at 2pm. Prior to the game, the women will be honoring their seniors.
