Box Score 2 Clermont, FL – The D'Youville softball team wrapped up their spring training schedule on Wednesday afternoon with a 6-2 over the Elmhurst Bluejays and a 2-0 loss against the Hendrix Warriors.
Neither D'Youville nor Elmhurst crossed the plate in the first inning of game one, but D'Youville was the first to strike in the second inning. Pitcher Kalie McHenry (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) led off the inning with a triple. Two batters later, Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) grounded to short, driving in McHenry for the game's first run.
The Spartans were at it once again in the fifth inning to increase their lead. Evans doubled to left center with one out in the inning. Ashley Colan (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) then singled and advanced on the throw to second, also moving Evans to third. A passed ball got by the Elmhurst catcher, allowing Evans to score and Colan to take third.
Lydia Monin (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry Charter School) then singled, scoring Colan and Monin advanced to third on an error from the Bluejay shortstop. Up next, MacKenzie Kehlenbeck (Alabama, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) singled to left and drove in Monin. The inning ended with the Spartans taking a 4-0 lead.
In the next inning, Hannah Turek (Depew, NY/Lancaster) reached base on an error by the third baseman. Then Victoria Purucker (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint) singled up the middle and was pinch ran for by Sierra Belkota (North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint). Evans came up next and drove in both runners and extended the Spartan lead to 6-0.
The Bluejays would get two runs back in the bottom of the sixth but it wouldn't be enough as the Spartans would go on to win 6-2 over Elmhurst.
Evans led the team with two hits and three RBI, with Monin and Kehlenbeck each adding an RBI and a hit. McHenry pitched a complete game, going seven innings and striking out seven.
In the second game of the day against Hendrix, D'Youville failed to have a run cross the plate. The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third and added a second run in the top of the seventh. The Spartans had runners on third several times, but were unable to get a run across the plate.
Monin led the team with two hits in the game and the team had seven total. Hendrix only had three hits the entire game due to a great defensive effort by D'Youville and great pitching from McHenry. Kalie pitched her second complete game of the day going seven innings, allowing one earned run and striking out 11.
D'Youville will return to Buffalo for their next game and play their home opener on Monday, March 28th at 3 and 5pm against Morrisville State.
