Magee, Korona's Career Days Lead Spartans To First Conference Win

Box Score

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team won their first conference game of the season on Saturday afternoon against the second place Mount Aloysius Mounties by the final score of 55-49.

Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) started off the game with a made three-pointer, giving the Spartans a 3-0 lead. Two minutes later, Magee would hit another three-pointer, giving D'Youville a 10-2 lead. Seniors Shannon Dougherty (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) and Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) each added 4 points in the quarter and the Spartans led the Mounties 16-8 after 10 minutes.

Mount Aloysius began the second quarter aggressive on offense, closing their deficit to 2 points. With 5:03 remaining in the second, the Mounties took their first lead of the game and looked to build on it. Following a pair of Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) free-throws at 4:03, the Spartans would go scoreless until there were 0:34 seconds left in the half. Mount Aloysius took advantage of the scoring drought for the Spartans, taking a 29-24 lead into the half.

Both teams would struggle on offense coming out of the lockerrooms. The Spartans scored only 4 points through the first 5:42 of the third, including a layup from Colleen Wirth (Elma, NY/Iroquois). Alexis Smith tied the game and gave her team the lead at 30-29.

The Mounties grabbed their lead right back on the next possession, but Korona and Magee put their team back out in front. Korona scored 7 points in just over 2 minutes with a third three-pointer from Magee in the same time span. D'Youville led 40-32 with 1:14 remaining in the third quarter, but Mount Aloysius scored 3 points and trailed 41-35 heading into the fourth.

The combination of Korona and Magee continued their offensive momentum into the fourth and final quarter. Korona scored the first 4 points for the Spartans in the quarter with Magee adding in a layup that gave D'Youville a 47-39 lead with 5:10 left in the game.

Again coming up with clutch offense, Korona scored a jumper with 1:24 to extend the Spartan lead to 10. Then with 0:36 seconds left, she hit 2 free-throws to ice the game and help give her team a 55-49 win over Mount Aloysius.

Jean-Ann Korona had a career game. The junior scored 21 points and recorded a career high 15 rebounds in the win for her second consecutive double-double and was a perfect 11-11 from the free-throw line. Magan Magee also had a career game in her first season as a Spartan. The freshman scored a career high 11 points and recorded another career high in steals with 6.

Alexis Smith had 8 points and her sister Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) scored 2. Senior Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels Academy) grabbed a season high 7 rebounds and fellow senior Danette Laguerre (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) added 4 steals and 3 rebounds.
