Box Score Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's basketball team suffered their first loss in three games on Saturday afternoon from the conference leading La Roche Redhawks by the final score of 91-55.
La Roche was strong on offense in the first quarter grabbing a 13-4 lead with 6:18 left to go in the first. The Redhawks extended their lead to 25-8 with 2:41 to go but the Spartans would make up some ground with points from Hannah Simone (Wayland, NY/Bishop Kearney) and Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) and the Spartans trailed after the first quarter 25-11.
The Redhawks continued to push the ball on offense in the second quarter. Just under 3 minutes in, La Roche took a 32-16 lead over the Spartans. Five different players scored in the quarter, including 5 points from Colleen Wirth (Elma, NY/Iroquois) and free throws from Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf). However, D'Youville faced a large deficit at the half, trailing 53-25.
In the third quarter, La Roche continued to run away with the game. Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) scored the final basket of the third for D'Youville with 3:04 remaining and the Redhawks were leading 74-36 with only the fourth quarter remaining.
D'Youville's offense had their best quarter of the game, outscoring the Redhawks 19-17 with all of the baskets coming from different Spartans. La Roche would go on to win in commanding fashion by the final score of 91-55.
All 12 of the D'Youville players scored in the game on Saturday. Colleen Wirth continued to make her mark on the team, starting her third consecutive game and leading the team with 12 points. Alexis Smith followed with 8 points while Danette Laguerre (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) scored 7.
Wirth also led the team with 6 rebounds and 5 steals, while Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels Academy), Monica June and Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) all tied with 2 assists. Darian Evans (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) led the team in rebounding off the bench with 5 and added 4 points.
The women will travel to Medaille on Wednesday evening to play the Mavericks at 8pm.
