Box Score Erie, PA – The D'Youville women's basketball team suffered their third straight loss after falling to the Penn State-Behrend Lions on Thursday evening by the final score of 73-53.
D'Youville struggled offensively in the first quarter. The Lions jumped out to a 19-0 lead in the first, with the Spartans scoring 1 point coming from a Danette Laguerre (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) on a free throw with 0:20 left in the quarter.
The Spartans played better on both sides of the ball in the second quarter. A majority of the team's points came from the free throw line. Colleen Wirth (Elma, NY/Iroquois) went 4 for 6 in the quarter and Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) went 2-2 to combine for 6 points from the freshmen. Hannah Simone (Wayland, NY/Bishop Kearney) added a layup and the Spartans trailed at halftime 30-9.
In the third quarter, the D'Youville's offense would find its way and begin to put some points on the board. Six different Spartans scored in the quarter, including 5 points from Laguerre and 4 from Wirth. Sisters Jordan Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) and Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) each added 2 points and the third quarter closed out with the Spartans trailing 47-28.
The fourth quarter was another balanced scoring attack for D'Youville. Eight different players scored for the Spartans in the quarter as they combined 25 points. Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) scored 8 points with Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels Academy) and Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf) each adding threes. Behrend went on to win the game by the final score of 73-53.
Colleen Wirth led the team in scoring on Thursday with 11 points, followed by Jean-Ann Korona with 10. Korona grabbed a team high 7 rebounds with Darian Evans (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) bringing in 5 in her first start of the season. Hannah Simone also started her first game of the season, adding 4 points.
All 6 players who came off the bench for D'Youville scored at least 3 points. Wirth added 2 rebounds and 2 assists and Alexis Smith had 6 points and 3 rebounds. Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) continued to grow her role on the team, starting her fifth consecutive game.
The women will return home on Saturday, January 23rd as they host the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats at 3pm in the College Center Gym.
