Box Score Altoona, PA - The D'Youville Women's Basketball Team bounced back from a defeat on Wednesday to take down the Penn State-Altoona Lions Saturday afternoon by the score of 69-59, wrapping up the road portion of the Spartan's schedule.
D'Youville's newest member of the 1,000 point club, Bridget Andrews (Amherst, NY/Sacred Heart Academy), opened up the scoring with a three-pointer. The first 5 baskets of the game came from 4 different Spartans, including the opening three from Andrews. In the matter of a minute, D'Youville increased their lead from 8 to 11 after 3 baskets from 3 different Spartans on 3 straight possessions. Awilda Murphy (Kenmore, NY/Sacred Heart Academy), Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) and Sarah Marino (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels Academy) accounted for the 7 straight points, with Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) picking up assists on 2 of the baskets.
With 7:29 remaining in the first half, Andrews hit another three to give D'Youville a 28-13 lead. About 2 minutes later, the senior hit another three to increase the lead to 31-15. Smith scored 2 baskets towards the end of the first half to send the Spartans into half with the lead, 35-20
The Lions came out in the second half and began to chip away at the Spartan lead. Casey Bartels (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) and Danette Laguerre (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) answered with a combined 6 points of their own to give D'Youville a 41-26 lead with 15:33 remaining in the game. Andrews scored 5 points in one minute to send D'Youville up by 15 half way through the second half, giving the Spartans a cushion.
Morgan McDermott (Hamburg, NY/Nichols) had 4 straight points of her own, giving D'Youville a 17 point lead over the Lions with over 7 minutes remaining in the game. The final 13 points of the game would come from 6 different Spartans as the women closed out there win over the host Penn State-Altoona Lions by the final score of 69-59.

Coming off her historic game on Wednesday, Bridget Andrews led the Spartans with 18 points on Saturday. Andrews also recorded a team high 6 assists and chipped in with a rebound. Fellow senior Casey Bartels was the second leading scorer on the team with a career high 11 points and also tied for a team high in steals with 2. Bartels also had the second most amount of minutes with 36.
Starters Jean-Ann Korona and Alexis Smith both had 10 points and were the top 2 rebounders on the team. Smith had 9 total, one shy of a double-double and the junior captain had 4 assists and a block while Korona had 7 rebounds. Awilda Murphy chipped in with 4 points and 4 assists while grabbing 6 rebounds as well.
Danette Laguerre led all bench players with 8 points and 3 assists. Sarah Marino and Jillian Piniewski (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca) each had 4 rebounds to lead all bench players. Marino also had 3 points and 2 assists with Piniewski blocking 1 shot, scoring 1 point and recording 2 steals. Morgan McDermott had 4 points and a rebound.
Freshmen Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf), Mary Roberts (Rochester, NY/Northstar Christian Academy) and Hannah Simone (Wayland, NY/Bishop Kearney) and junior Alyssa Donnelly (Alden, NY/Nardin Academy) all got in the game as well.
The women will close out their season at home on Saturday, February 21st for the team's senior game against Franciscan. The game begins at 2pm.
