Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville Women's Basketball Team dropped their second straight game of the new year to cross-town rival Medaille by the score of 53-49.

D'Youville started out the game with a 9-0 run, holding the host Mavericks without a basket in the first 4 minutes. Medaille would begin to get back into the game, drawing the score within a basket with 9:57 remaining. Despite a push to bring the lead in favor of the home team, D'Youville controlled the offensive game in the first half, never trailing and taking a 33-23 lead into the half.

To begin the second half, Medaille began to push their way back into the game. After trailing by 10 to start the final 20 minutes of play, the Mavericks tied the game with 13:55 left in the game. The Spartans held off Medaille's offensive push until 6:05 remaining when the home team took a 42-41 lead, their first of the game. 

The two AMCC opponents would trade the lead 4 times in the remaining 5 minutes, until Medaille took the lead once and for all with just over a minute left. The Mavericks would win the game by the final of 53-49.

Leading the way for the Spartans was junior standout Amanda Marcely (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes). Marcely had 19 points to go with her 12 rebounds. To her double-double, Amanda added 3 steals and 2 assists. The junior transfer had 6 rebounds on both ends of the court, pulling in 6 on offense as well as 6 on defense.

Last season's leading scorer, Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) had 10 points with 4 rebounds. Sophomore Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) scored 5 points in addition to her 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Sacred Heart alums, Bridget Andrews (Amherst, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) and Awilda Murphy (Kenmore, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) scored 6 points each.

Turnovers hurt the Spartans all game, giving the ball away 20 times. From the Medaille side, 6 out of the 7 Maverick players scored.

D'Youville's next game will come against Mount Aloysius on Saturday, January 10th at 1pm.
