Box Score Pittsburgh, PA - The D'Youville Women's Basketball Team traveled to play the La Roche Redhawks early Saturday afternoon and continued their current slide by falling to the hosts 88-53.
La Roche jumped out to an early 9-2 lead against the Spartans in the first 4 minutes of the game, playing strong on both ends of the court to begin the game. Three straight Amanda Marcely (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes) layups got D'Youville within 6 points before the Redhawks picked up their intensity on offense and defense. Outscoring the Spartans 12-5 over a 5 minute span gave the home team a 26-13 lead with 7 minutes remaining in the first half. After a three-pointer by Awilda Murphy (Kenmore, NY/Sacred Heart Academy), the lead was cut to 11.
With 3:51 remaining, La Roche held a 37-19 lead. D'Youville went on a 8-0 run to cut the lead to 10, capped off by a Murphy made layup. With :02 left in the half, the Redhawks would score a layup, taking a 39-27 lead into the locker room.
D'Youville quickly became down by 18 points just under 2 minutes into the second half. Roughly a minute later, Jillian Piniewski (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca) made a layup to cut the deficit to 16. The 16 point deficit would be the closest D'Youville would get to the Redhawks for the remainder of the game, winning by the final score of 88-53.
Amanda Marcely led the Spartans in scoring with 18 points. Marcely also recorded 6 rebounds along with 2 assists and 2 steals. Fighting off an injury, Awilda Murphy scored 10 points with 3 assists and 2 rebounds. The freshman went 2-2 from behind the arc, also making both of her free throws. Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) led the team with 9 rebounds, 3 blocks and 3 steals. Korona added 5 points and 3 assists.
Freshmen Hannah Simone (Wayland, NY/Bishop Kearney) and Mary Roberts (Rochester, NY/Northstar Christian Academy) both scored 3 points off the bench. Roberts grabbed 5 rebounds on the afternoon. Jillian Piniewski scored 7 points and had 3 rebounds.
The women will look to halt their current slide this Wednesday, February 4th as they play host to conference rival Medaille at 6pm.
