Box Score Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville Women's Basketball Team suffered their second straight conference loss on Wednesday after being defeating by the visiting Pitt.-Bradford Panthers 69-46.
Alexis Smith (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) scored the first two baskets for the Spartans, giving the team an early 4-2 lead. Down by 5 with just under 10 minutes remaining after a Jillian Piniewski (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca) made layup, the Panthers would go on an offensive tear. Pitt.-Bradford went on a 14-1 run over the next 6 minutes, taking control of the game. Two straight baskets from Smith helped close the gap to 33-19 at halftime.
Jean-Ann Korona (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) scored 7 early points in the second half to close the deficit to 9, but the Panthers offense once again began to pull away from the host Spartans. D'Youville went 3 minutes without scoring a basket, and only scored 6 points in the final 9 minutes. All 6 of the D'Youville points came from free throws. The final score of the game was 69-46.
Coming off her highest scoring output of the season on Sunday, Smith topped that by scoring 22 points Wednesday evening. Grabbing a team high 9 rebounds, Smith was one shy of earning her first double-double of the season. Jean-Ann Korona was second on the team in points with 7, and rebounds with 5. Korona also added 2 blocks, a steal and an assist.
Senior Casey Bartels (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) led the team with 3 assist and added 3 rebounds with 5 points. Morgan McDermott (Hamburg, NY/Nichols) and Jillian Piniewski led the team in points off the bench with 2 each.
All 15 players on the Spartans team saw action on Wednesday night. Freshmen Ali Cochrane (New Port Richey, FL/Gulf) and Awilda Murphy (Kenmore, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) led the team with 2 rebounds each off the bench.
The women will get a chance to redeem themselves this weekend on Saturday, January 17th as they welcome Penn St.-Altoona into the College Center Gymnasium. The two AMCC opponents will tip off at 1:00pm.
